The Proof, Brandon

“What the?” I saw the article show up in my news feed. “Did you see the article?” Olivia nodded.

I clicked on the video. It showed Jessica walking up to Olivia. It was taken from the level above and behind them. Neither one appeared to be aware of the camera person. There was no sound, but Jessica appeared to be speaking aggressively to Olivia. Then Jessica took a step forward and slapped Olivia across the face. A muscle in my jaw twitched. My chest tightened.

Then Olivia jumped on Jessica and shortly after that, the band ran up and Paul broke up the fight. Katie arrived last.

“Did you see that?” I went back to the videocall. Olivia had been watching on her phone. She looked away from her phone and back at me. I couldn’t tell how she was reacting to this bombshell. I watched it a few more times. Then I looked up at my screen.

“That was how it happened. And no one believed me.” She sighed. The pain in her eyes communicated volumes to me. It felt like a sledgehammer hit my chest. My throat grew dry. She had every right to hate me. If she never wanted to be with me again, I’d completely understand.

If I could take back my reaction to the situation, I’d do anything. I feared that she’d never forget this and that it would impact our entire relationship. It began to dawn on me that trust was easy to break but difficult to earn. How would she be able to trust me again, if she thought I wouldn’t have her back when she needed it? I wasn’t sure what to say so I waited for her to respond. "I feel vindicated. But I'm sad I got kicked off the tour." I jumped in, "I can help you get back on the tour." I probably sounded too eager, but I couldn't help myself. I wanted to right the wrong. Her blue eyes gazed at me. I wanted to be with her. I didn't care about anything else in that moment. "Well after all that's happened, I'm not sure I want to go back," she replied. My mouth went dry. My head swam. This couldn't be happening. "It would be so perfect to have you with us. You could take photos." "That's just it. I can't take someone else's job. I heard your other photographer Nick, just needed a break. I’m sure you don't need two photographers. And besides, it's just a toxic environment there. I don't want to be someplace where I'm not wanted or that makes me uncomfortable." I turned my head away and considered what she’d said. Was it true that we had a toxic environment? Everyone had been kind to me so it never occurred to me that others might have a different experience. "You really think it's a toxic environment?" She nodded. "Yes, I do."

“I’ll do everything in my power to resolve this. I want to talk to Paul about having you back on the tour.
